Alyoshenka is a solo performance inspired by the story of a prematurely born female baby
with numerous deformities discovered in the village of Kaolinovy, Russia, in May 1996.
The small fetus, affectionately named "Alyoshenka," was found by an elderly woman,
Tamara Vasilyeva Prosvirina, who cradled it in a blanket, claiming to the authorities that the
baby was her own. The unusual appearance of the infant led to rumours of extraterrestrial
origins: "brown body, no hair, big protruding eyes, moving its tiny lips, making squeaky
sounds…"as recounted by witnesses. Some experts contended that the skeletal differences
precluded it from being human. On April 15, 2004, scientists officially stated that Alyoshenka
was just a prematurely born female human infant with severe deformities, possibly linked to
the far-reaching fallout from the 1957 Kyshtym Disaster, the first nuclear catastrophe in
Soviet history.
After the discovery of the fetus, the old woman was sent to a psychiatric hospital and the
baby died, then disappeared. Little is known about what happened to the remains of
Alyoshenka, details about her death are elusive. Some still asserts that the body was taken
by a UFO inhabited by members of Alyoshenka's species.
Drawing inspiration from this narrative, the performance contemplates the hypothetical
survival of this creature and raises thought-provoking questions. What if she had managed
to grow up? How might she have integrated into contemporary society? How would she
have been perceived? A 27-year-old entity existing in a world where hardly anyone could
view her as anything other than a monster.
